Today’s managers are expected to deliver results and develop people – often at the same time and under pressure. So the challenge for managers is to shift from a traditional “tell and fix” approach to one that builds capability, ownership, and confidence through effective coaching conversations. This workshop focuses on practical, everyday coaching skills that can be applied in one-on-ones, performance discussions, and informal check-ins. Participants will learn how to ask better questions, listen more effectively, and support their people to think, decide, and act for themselves, while still maintaining accountability and performance standards. At the end of this course you should be able to: • Adopt a coaching mindset • Demonstrate core coaching skills • Apply a simple coaching framework to structure effective coaching conversations • Use coaching techniques to support performance • Identify and leverage everyday coaching opportunities This course will cover: DEVELOPING A COACHING MINDSET: FROM TELLING TO ENABLING • Why “manager as coach” matters in today’s workplaces • The shift from fixer and expert to enabler and developer • Coaching vs managing vs mentoring vs counselling • Common managerial traps: advice-giving, rescuing, micromanaging • Growth mindset and belief in people’s capability • Holding accountability while empowering ownership CORE COACHING SKILLS EVERY MANAGER NEEDS • Deep listening (levels of listening) • Asking powerful, open questions • Using silence and curiosity • Reflecting, summarising, and challenging respectfully A SIMPLE COACHING MODEL FOR MANAGERS • GROW (Goal, Reality, Options, Way Forward) for use in; o 10-minute check-ins o Performance conversations o Development discussions COACHING FOR PERFORMANCE AND ACCOUNTABILITY • Coaching through underperformance • Balancing empathy with accountability • Moving from excuses to commitment • Coaching around priorities, focus, and standards
